The United States of America is blessed with an abundance of Crude Oil and Natural Gas reserves – more than 19 Billion barrels of crude oil and over 280 Trillion cubic feet of Natural gas at the end of 2009.  US reserves are impressive, but our oil reserves are only good enough to rank us 14th in the world according the Central Intelligence Agency World Factbook for 2010.

The abundance of Oil and Gas in the USA is offset by our position as the most developed and industrialized nation in the world. The United States consumes more oil per day per person than any other nation in world; in fact our per capita consumption is more than twice that of other industrialized nations.

The end result of this imbalance between America’s world ranking in reserves in the teens and our world leading consumption is that the USA is a net importer of Crude Oil – more than 9.5 Million net barrels per week in 2011.

Importing Crude Oil to satisfy excess consumption threatens America’s independence and security and adversely impacts our balance of trade. A majority of America’s imported oil comes from our neighbors Canada and Mexico, but a portion is imported from, and thus we are beholden to, certain nations in the Middle East and South America to fuel our industrial economy.

The key to energy independence from those who may wish us ill and to level our trade imbalance is to unlock America’s vast oil and gas reserves and cut down the amount of imports.
